Use Hosts File for Personal DNS Management

If you don’t have the ability to update DNS entries on you network but still need to associate or (dis-associate) a name to (from) an IP number you can use your HOSTS file located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. The # is used to comment

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.123.123 MyDevSharePointServer.MyDomain.Com
192.168.123.234 MyTestServer

Use shortcuts to go to your favorite websites:

207.246.126.10 f # Fark
74.125.45.105 g # Google

You can also block unwanted domain names from resolving by pointing them back to your local IP – 127.0.0.1.

127.0.0.1 IHateThisWebSite.Com # Never take me there again
127.0.0.1 NastyWebSite.Com # Ewww!
